Context
Epistemic uncertainty arises where available knowledge about a represented system, model, parameter, hypothesis, relationship, prediction, or state remains incomplete or unresolved.
Within scientific, engineering, computational, and analytical environments, this form of uncertainty provides a way to distinguish limitations in what is known from variability attributed to the represented process itself.
Differentiation
Epistemic uncertainty differs from aleatoric uncertainty by locating the uncertainty in limitations of available knowledge rather than in variability treated as inherent in the represented process.
It also differs from a particular estimation method: probability distributions, intervals, ensembles, alternative models, and qualitative classifications may represent epistemic uncertainty without defining the uncertainty itself.
System Role
Within bounded information and model environments, epistemic uncertainty functions as a structural distinction between what is represented, what remains unresolved, and how that unresolved knowledge is expressed.
It enables separation between the represented state of knowledge and uncertainty arising from inherent variability, while preserving the possibility that the classification depends on the model, available information, and chosen system boundary.
